How to Determine If a Private High School is Right For You and Your Child

People often wonder if they should send their child to a private school instead of the local public school. Part of the reason for this is that there are some commonly accepted beliefs about private schools as they compare to public schools, some of which are good (like my child will get a better education) and some of which are bad. Regardless, if you are considering sending your child to a private school, there are some things you need to take into account

Price – Private schools naturally cost money, so it is important to ensure that you will be able to afford the tuition costs. This one is pretty self-explanatory but still sometimes overlooked until it’s too late.

Location – Is the school that you are considering within a reasonable distance from where you live Is there a bus route available If not, be aware that you will have to provide some method of transportation for your child every day, at least until your child gets his or her driver’s license. If the school is very far away, does it offer room and board Is you child ok with that Are you ok with that

What does your child want – Does your child want to go to a private school Why Is it because they are gifted academically and are choosing a school that will help them get into an Ivy League college Is it because they are athletically talented and the school may help them get into professional sports Or is the only reason private schools are being considered because you want them to go there

Private high schools can be a wonderful experience if everyone is on board with the idea, and if a good school is found. Just remember to do your due diligence before signing any contracts.
