This is an issue that has caused debates over the years between local school boards and parents of high school girls who have been taking birth control pills. The issue of birth control usage in high school girls is considered to be of the same level with popping illegal drugs into their mouths as well as being caught carrying guns inside the campus. This usually results to a disciplinary sanction such as a suspension from school.
Should high schools discipline girls if they are caught with birth control pills
Local high school boards have the authority to discipline high school girls when they are caught taking birth control pills inside the campus since they are only concerned about the safety and security of each student falling in their responsibility inside the campus. However, the severity of the sanctions may not be at the level of those true crimes such as illegal drug and fire arm possession. The problem with the level of discipline comes when high school girls are being punished severely for something that does not even fit the crime committed or if that is a crime at all.
Many health advocates would point out the irony in the severity of the punishment and the school’s advocacy of preventing teen pregnancy. The logic simply is not there while there is an ongoing conflict of two principles. The clashing of the two ideas makes people confused as to what is graver, teen pregnancy or popping birth control pills inside the campus.
There are other schools however that provides students birth control pills and are lenient on the whole issue. However, some schools are very strict that they would punish high school girls caught with birth control pills as if they have committed a grave crime worthy of the unjustly punishment.
If there is such a thing as a punishment for being caught with birth control pills inside the campus, it would be just if they keep it at the minimum level since their major concern is the safety of the students under their jurisdiction. Under certain school systems, they have strict compliance to the codes concerning prescription and illegal drugs inside the campus. Regarding this matter, it is justified to expel students who violate such law. In birth control pills however, it is not justifiable. Reviews of the case should be done.
Some of the school board officials would reason out that they can’t take any risk concerning the safety of the students who are learning inside their school since it is in their liability and responsibility. Some pills in any form may be shared to another student who has been diagnosed with other health problem that may react with that pill. Given this circumstance, the school is still held responsible and liable with what happened. Another risk is when drugs, such as Yasmin, produces undesirable side effects which could endanger the life of the student.
